Focus on Curriculum

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of er and ar. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, ue, oi, er and ar.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book I Love You Forever.  We also added a Groundhog poem to our poetry binder.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ap word family this week.  First we started with the letter combination ap and then we add different letters to the beginning of ap to make new words.  For example, for the ap word family we formed the words (cap, map, tap etc.)
Sight Words:  We learned the words good, look, and jump.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  This week we worked with weight, focusing on the concepts of heavier, lighter, and estimation.
Writing: We started writing "How to Topics”, where we came up with ideas that we are each good at doing and then selected a topic to start writing about.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.
Social Studies: We learned about Groundhog's Day!
Art:  Our class completed a Groundhog Day project!
On Monday we will be celebrating our 100th day in school this year and complete many fun activities focusing on the 100th day!
