Holiday Friends!

Focus on Curriculum

November 30, 2018

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters y and x.  For the letter y we pretend we are eating yogurt and for the letter x we pretend we are taking an “x-ray”.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, z, w, v, y, and x.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book The Relatives Came.  We talked about the vocabulary words (tend, squeeze, wrinkled, silent).  We also read a few Holiday books. We added a new winter poem to our poetry binders.
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words did and little.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Word Family: This week we started our word families.  We worked on the at word family.  First we started with the word at and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word at to make new words.  For example, for the at word family we formed the words (rat, hat, sat, cat etc.)

Handwriting:  We wrote about how to make a snowman.
Math:  We practiced counting to 100 by one’s and tens.  We are focusing on the numbers 13, 14, and 15, along with making ten using a ten frame.  Our center activities have a winter theme.
Art:  We made an elf to celebrate the holiday season.
Special Visitor:  The girls and boys have been very excited everyday waiting to see if Buddy the Elf has been peeking in on our class.  Buddy have been leaving little notes telling them they see them working hard.
