Gingerbread Week!





Focus on Curriculum     

December 14, 2018

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letter combinations oa and ie. Next week I will introduce the letter combinations ee and or.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, and x. We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.

Reading:  We read the book Arthur’s Perfect Christmas.  We learned the meanings of the definitions of family tree, related, and cousin.  We also read Corduroy’s Christmas Surprise, A Christmas Wish for Corduroy, Toy Story Christmas Toys, and Mooseltoe.  We added the poem Little Ole Elf to our poetry binders.
Next week will be Gingerbread Week  We will read many books about our new friend the Gingerbread Man who mysteriously ran away and is hiding somewhere in our school. (Sh! Please don’t tell the kids!) J  We will read the books The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Pirates, The Gingerbread Cowboy, The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Girl, and The Gingerbread Man is Loose in the School, The Gingerbread Man is Loose at Christmas Time, and The Gingerbread Man is Loose on the Fire Truck to try and find clues of where our new friend went.  The Gingerbread Man will leave us clues to where he might be.  We will make Gingerbread friends in hopes that he returns.  Along with reading those books and gingerbread activities we will complete many other fun holiday activities.  We will also read stories about the Gingerbread Man’s friends, Pete the Cat, Olive The Other Reindeer, and Clifford’s Christmas.  The students will create their own Rudolph bag and put Reindeer food inside to prepare for the upcoming holidays.

Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words jump and up and next week we will learn the words, on, help, and yes. We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Math: We continued working on addition and the concept of a part, plus-a-part, equals a whole.  We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We did holiday math activities all week. Our center activities have a holiday theme.
Art:  Our projects included a Grinch, Gingerbread Man, a gift for you the parents, which will be coming home early this upcoming week, and made reindeer food.
We hope our Gingerbread man will return for our Holiday Party.

Holiday Fun!

December 7, 2018

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the vowel combination ai.  We now know that when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking and says its name “a”. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, z, w, v, y, x, and ai.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book Me And My Family Tree.  We learned the meanings of the definitions of family tree, related, and cousin.  We also read The Littlest Elf, The Gingerbread Man, the Gingerbread Man Loose in the School and Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Power of Giving. We added the poem Winters Here to our poetry binders.
Sight Words:  This week we added the words get and will and put our words on our sight word rings.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens. We are focusing on the addition concept of two parts making a whole.  Our center activities have a holiday theme.
We also had a K-9 police dog "Niko" come and visit our school.  It was so much fun!

Holiday Friends!

November 30, 2018

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters y and x.  For the letter y we pretend we are eating yogurt and for the letter x we pretend we are taking an “x-ray”.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, z, w, v, y, and x.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book The Relatives Came.  We talked about the vocabulary words (tend, squeeze, wrinkled, silent).  We also read a few Holiday books. We added a new winter poem to our poetry binders.
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words did and little.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Word Family: This week we started our word families.  We worked on the at word family.  First we started with the word at and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word at to make new words.  For example, for the at word family we formed the words (rat, hat, sat, cat etc.)

Handwriting:  We wrote about how to make a snowman.
Math:  We practiced counting to 100 by one’s and tens.  We are focusing on the numbers 13, 14, and 15, along with making ten using a ten frame.  Our center activities have a winter theme.
Art:  We made an elf to celebrate the holiday season.
Special Visitor:  The girls and boys have been very excited everyday waiting to see if Buddy the Elf has been peeking in on our class.  Buddy have been leaving little notes telling them they see them working hard.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 16, 2018

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters v (we pretend we are driving a van) and W (we pretend we are the wind).  Next week we will learn the letter Z.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, w, v, z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book A Turkey For Thanksgiving.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We also read Turkey Trouble.  We read a Thanksgiving poem.
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words look and for.  Next week our words are at and am.  We are going to keep our sight word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Handwriting: After reading Turkey Trouble we did a writing activity describing how we would dress up a turkey in order so he/she could hide on Thanksgiving day and not be the Thanksgiving meal.  We then shared our writing with the class.
Math: We continued unit 3.  We practiced counting, reading and writing numbers 11, 12, 13,14, and 15.  We even completed a math lesson using our Ipads and a ten-frame app.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the trimester goal of counting to 100.   Our math centers had a fall and Turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about bears and hibernation.  We also talked about what we are thankful for this upcoming Thanksgiving!
Art:  We cut out and colored two turkey projects, one for our Friday project and one for Grandparents Day.  Shh!!!  Please don’t tell the grandparents.  The kids are excited to complete a Turkey project with their grandparents.
We are looking forward to Grandparent’s Day this upcoming Tuesday, November 20th!

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters b and j.  For the letter b we pretend we are hitting a baseball with a bat and for the letter j we wiggle like a bowl of Jell-O.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, and j.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read and worked with the book Pumpkin Pumpkin.  We completed a pumpkin life cycle activity. 
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the words play and say.  We are going to keep our sight word bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Handwriting:  We wrote our letters j and b in both uppercase and lowercase.
Math: We continued working with numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.  We also focused on the concepts of greater than, more, less than, and fewer.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the year goal of counting to 100.  Our math centers had a fall and Turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about Veteran’s Day and completed Veteran’s Day activities including a Veterans Day coloring picture that we are going to display outside our classroom for the upcoming Veteran’s Day holiday and for the Veterans that will be visiting our classes on Monday.

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters l and f.  For the letter l we pretend we are licking a lollipop.  To make the sound of the letter f we pretend that we are squeezing the air out of an inflatable fish. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k, i, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, and f.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book From Seed to Pumpkin.  We did many activities that centered on the story.

Math: We continued working with the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.  We also continued working on composing and decomposing numbers.   We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the year goal of counting to 100.  Our math centers had a fall and Halloween theme. 
Art:  We made a pumpkin vine project showing the growth process from seed to pumpkin.

Bats, Bats and More Bats!

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters o and u.  For the letter o we pretend we are turning a light switch on and off.  To make the sound of the letter u we pretend that we are opening an umbrella. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k, i, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, and u.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book Stellaluna.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We learned the definitions of swooped, grasped, anxious, and curious.  We read the stories The Littlest Mummy, The Monster of the Woods, Where’s My Mummy?, Crankenstein  and The Night Before Halloween.  The story begins “Twas the night before Halloween and all through the house all the creatures were stirring, except for the mouse.  The monsters had gathered to plan and prepare, for the trick-or-treaters who soon would be there.”   We added a bat poem to our poetry binders.
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the sight words we and me.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  We completed make-a-match activities focusing on the words we and me.
Math: We continued writing our numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and working on the proper formation.  We worked with the concept of adding.  The students showed great teamwork!   We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the year goal of 100.  Our math centers had a Halloween theme.
Art: We made a bat project to celebrate Halloween.

Handwriting:  We worked on our letters d and g upper and lower case.
Math: We talked about reading, writing, and counting numbers up to 10.  We also focused on composing and decomposing numbers.  Our math centers had a Halloween theme.
Art:  We made a Spookley pumpkin project

Apples, Apples, Apples!

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters r and m.  For the letter r we pretend we are Rags the dog and say r,r,r,r.  To make the sound of the letter m we pretend we are hungry and see a yummy meal and we say m,m,m,m,m. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k, i e, h, r and m.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read Apples, Apples, Apples.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We learned the definitions of orchard, limb, chart, seed, flesh, skin, core, stem, and leaf.   We did an apple project in which we colored and labeled the parts of an apple.  We also added the poem Apples, Apples to our poetry binders.
Sight  Words:  This week we learned the sight words big and on.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  We completed make-a-match activities focusing on the words big and in.
Handwriting: We worked in our handwriting books focusing on the letters R and M both upper and lowercase letters.
Math: We finished our 2-D and 3-D shape unit.  Next week we start working with numbers 6-10 and our composing and decomposing numbers unit.
Art:  We made an apple project in which we chose an apple color and labeled our apple.

Autumn is Here!

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the sound of the letters e and h.  For the letter e we pretend we are breaking eggs.  To make the sound of the letter h we pretend we just finished running and are out of breath and we say h,h,h,h,h.. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k, i, e, and h. We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read When Autumn Comes.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We learned the definitions of autumn, ripened, harvest, and preparation.  We also read Disney Halloween stories and In 1492 by Jean Marzollo because of Columbus Day on Monday.  We also added the poem Falling Leaves to our poetry binders.
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the words and and you.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  We completed Make-a-Match activities focusing on and and you.
Handwriting: We worked on writing the letter e and h in both uppercase and lowercase form.
Math: We continued working on numbers 1-5.  We also talked about shapes 2-D and 3-D. (circle square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube)
Social Studies:  We talked about Christopher Columbus discovering America.
Art:  We made a fall tree using our hands as the tree and different colors of paint to represent the changing fall leaves.  We put 50 leaves on our tree.

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters n, c, and k.  For the letter n we pretend we are flying a plane.  To make the sound of the letters c and k we pretend we are playing the castanets. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k and i.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read Me On The Map.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We learned what a map, town, state and country is. 
Sight Words:  We learned the words like and to.  We are keeping our rainbow word bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. 
Handwriting: We wrote in our journals “This is a map of my room,” focusing on our sight words a and my and connecting that to our Me On The Map book.
Math: We talked about shapes (triangles, squares, rectangles, circles).  We talked about how many sides and corners each shape has.  We also continued practicing writing our numbers.
Art:  We made a flip book that included our world, continent, country, state, town, and school.

Rocking In Our Kindergarten Shoes!

Jolly Phonics: This week we learned the letters i and p.  We pretend we are Inky the Mouse and are itching our whiskers and saying the sound of short i.  To make the sound of the letter p we pretend we are puffing out birthday candles. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, and p.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read Pete the Cat Rocking in my School Shoes.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We also read many other Pete the Cat books. 
Sight Words:  This week we learned the words can and see.  We read our very own small book titled Outside that focused on our sight words I, see, a  and our very own Pete The Cat book.  Please review your sight words nightly.
Handwriting: We worked on writing the letters i and p both uppercase and lowercase.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on apples and the apple orchard.
Math: We continued working with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Art:  We made a Pete the Cat project showing him rocking in his shoes!

Kindergarten: Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom

September 14, 2018


Jolly Phonics This week we learned the letters a and t.  We pretend ants are crawling up our arm for the letter a.  To make the sound of the letter t we pretend we are watching a tennis match. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, and t. We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them. 
Reading:  We read the book Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom.  We did many activities that centered on the story. 
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words a and the.  We worked on sight word make-a-match activities.  Please remember to bring your sight word pouch to school every day in the front sleeve of your green folder.
Math: We continued working with numbers 1 through 5.  We also worked on sorting (same, different, little/small, big/large).  We completed math activities using our new Ipads.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on being polite.
Art:  We made a Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom tree in which we spelled our names and put letters on the top of the coconut tree.
