Spring is Here!

Focus on Curriculum

March 22, 2019

Jolly Phonics:  We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read The Giving Tree, Little Quack, You’re My Little Bunny, and Hey Duck!
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ob word family this week.  First we start with the word ending ob and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ob to make new words.  For example, for the ob word family we formed the words (cob, Bob, job etc.)
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words this, that, and there.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked on the concepts of weight (lighter/heavier) and the concept of capacity.
Writing:  We wrote in our writing journals.  We also wrote about the stories we read in class this week!

Spring Ahead!

Focus on Curriculum

March 8, 2019

Jolly Phonics:  We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read Everything Spring and In Like a Lion Out Like a Lamb.  We talked about spring weather coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.  We predicted as a class whether the month of March would have more days with weather like a lion or a lamb.  We had a class discussion about spring weather.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ot word family this week.  First we start with the word ending ot and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ot to make new words.  For example, for the ot word family we formed the words (hot, cot, knot etc.)
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words are, but, and away and put our words in our popcorn word bags.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked with addition and subtraction including number bonds.  We also worked with measurement and data (length, height, weight).
Writing:  We continue focusing on what our writing needs to include.  A capital letter to start a sentence, proper punctuation, space between our words, neatness, and does our writing make sense?

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which focused on spring weather.

Art:  The students really enjoyed making their Lion and Lamb project to celebrate spring coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.
