March is almost here!



Focus on Curriculum

Jolly Phonics:  We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book Bears Loose Tooth.  We learned the vocabulary words: savored, frowned, welled, gulped, and nibbled.  We also watched The Berenstain Bears Go to the Dentist.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the en word family this week.  First we started with the word ending en and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending en to make new words.  For example, for the en word family we formed the words (Ben, men, pen, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words four, five, and said and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked with adding up 19 using 10 and ten frames as our starting point.
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas. The students then had a chance to share their work with their classmates.
Social Studies: We focused on Dental health in our Weekly Reader.  We even had our school nurse talk to the kindergarten students about the importance of dental health and brushing and flossing our teeth.
Art:  In class we made a Teddy Bear project that tied into our story for the week.  Bear’s Loose Tooth!


Next week is Dr. Seuss week in kindergarten.  Please be sure to check our Dr. Seuss schedule each day to find out about the fun activity planned for each day!

We also read Lincoln and Grace; a story based on true events of an eleven year old girl and her letter to President Abraham Lincoln right before he was elected President.  We talked about how women could not vote for the President and what it would be like to live in the 1860’s.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the et word family this week.  First we started with the word ending et and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending et to make new words.  For example, for the et word family we formed the words (jet, pet, vet etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words one, two and three and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We continued working with a combination of addition and subtraction. 
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.  We also wrote what we would do if we were the President of the United States.  The students then had a chance to share their work with their classmates.
Social Studies: We focused on Presidents Day.  We completed an interactive Weekly Reader about George Washington on our class whiteboard.  We also did a George Washington color by number, a Presidential hidden picture, and wrote about if we were President of the United States
Art:  In class we made an Abraham Lincoln hat project.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Reading:  This week we read the books The Day It Rained Hearts and There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Rose.  We also completed many Valentine’s Day activities and 100th day activities.  The children were able to color their very own  Zero The Hero in celebration of the 100th day! 
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ad word family this week.  First we started with the word ending ad and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ad to make new words.  For example, for the ad word family we formed the words (mad, dad, lad, bad, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words will, have, and must and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We continued working with a combination of addition and subtraction.  Our centers have a winter theme.
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.  We also wrote about what we would do if we had 100 dollars.
Art:  In class we made a Valentine project that the students are bringing home today to share with their families.  Please be sure to check your child’s backpack for their Valentine project.

Groundhog's Day!

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of er and ar. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, ue, oi, er and ar.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book Penguins a National Geographic Kids book.  We talked about things we thought we knew about penguins and confirmed them as we read the book.  We completed penguin activities in class.  We also added a Groundhog poem to our poetry binder.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ap word family this week.  First we started with the word ap and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word am to make new words.  For example, for the am word family we formed the words (cap, map, tap etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words good, look, and jump and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We started working with a combination of addition and subtraction.  Our centers have a winter theme.
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.  We also wrote about are Star Student of the week.
Social Studies: We learned about Groundhog's Day and completed a Groundhog Day project!
Art:  In class we made a penguin that will be on display in our classroom.

Remember:
Wednesday February 11th is a half-day.  School is dismissed at noon.

Valentine Party Information- Our Valentines Party is on Thursday February 12th.  On the valentine cards please have your child only sign their name and not who they are sent too.  Please do not bring any candy or treats with the valentine cards.  We have 19 students in our class.
No School Friday February 13th and Monday February 16th.
