Still Winter?

Focus on Curriculum

February 27, 2014

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s:  This week we reviewed our short a word families.  We worked on the an, at, ap and am word families.  We start with one of the word family endings: an, at, ap or am, and then we add different letters to the beginning of the endings to make new words.  For example, for the ap word family we formed the words (cap, map, trap, clap, nap, etc.).  Next week we will be working on the it and in word families.

Reading:  This week we read If I Ran The Rainforest, a Dr. Seuss series book. In honor of Dr. Seuss, and to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday, next week is Dr. Seuss all week long.  There are special activities planned for each day of the week. Please remember to check the activity that went home with your child.

Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words four, nine, and said and glued them in our spirals. We now have fifty five words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four, nine and said. Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.

Math: We focused on subtracting numbers up to ten. Please practice reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.  Please continue to practice addition facts that add up to ten along with subtracting numbers up to ten.

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which focused on dental health.  The students really enjoyed guessing different animals teeth in the reader.  We learned what the different animals use their teeth for.  We also talked about what foods are good for our teeth and what foods, if we have too much, are harmful for our teeth.
