Happy Holidays!


Focus on Curriculum     

December 1, 2017

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters w and v.  For the letter w we pretend we are the wind and for the letter v we pretend we are driving a car saying “vvvvv”.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, and v.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book The Relatives Came.  We talked about the vocabulary words (tend, squeeze, wrinkled, silent).  We also read a few Holiday books. We added a new winter poem to our poetry binders.
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words and and little.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. We also read our very own Foods I Like book that focused on the popcorn word and.
Handwriting:  We wrote about what we did and ate the long Thanksgiving weekend!
Math:  We practiced counting to 100 by one’s and tens.  We are focusing on the addition concept of two parts making a whole.  Our center activities have a winter theme.
Social Studies:  We read our Weekly Reader which was about mailing a Holiday card.
Art:  We made an elf to celebrate the holiday season.
Special Visitor:  The girls and boys have been very excited everyday waiting to see if Buddy the Elf or his sister Becky the Elf has been peeking in on our class.  The elves have been leaving little notes telling them they see them working hard.

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 17, 2017

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the sound of the letters ee (vowel combination) and or together. We reviewed when two vowels go walking the first vowel does the talking; saying its name, and the second vowel is quite.  Next week we will learn the letter Z.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, and or.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book A Turkey For Thanksgiving.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We also read Turkey Trouble.  We completed a turkey sequence activity. We read a Thanksgiving poem.
Sight  Words:  This week we learned  the sight  words ran and too.  Next week our words are into and for.  We are going to keep our sight word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Handwriting: After reading Turkey Trouble we did a writing activity saying what we would dress a turkey up like in order to hide on Thanksgiving and not be the Thanksgiving meal.  We then shared our writing with the class.
Math: We continued unit 3.  We practiced counting, reading and writing numbers 11, 12, 13, and 14. We even completed a math lesson using our Ipads and a ten-frame app.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the trimester goal of counting to 100.  We also completed a Turkey Teens book.  Our math centers had a fall and Turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about the Pilgrims and completed Pilgrim activities. 
Art:  We cut out and colored two turkey projects, one for our Friday project and one for Grandparents Day.  Shh!!!  Please don’t tell the grandparents.  The kids are excited to complete a Turkey project with their grandparents.
We are looking forward to Grandparent’s Day this upcoming Tuesday!

Veterans Day!

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters oa and ie (vowel combination) together.  For oa we say “oh” and ie we pretend we are saluting saying, “aye aye captain”.   We learned when two vowels go walking the first vowel does the talking; saying its name, and the second vowel is quite.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, and ie.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We continued to work with the book From Seed to Pumpkin and Pumpkin Pumpkin.  We also completed our very own Veteran’s Day book in honor of the men and women who serve our country and have served our country.  
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the words but and to.  We are going to keep our sight word bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Math: We started Unit 3 Making 10, counting to 15 and story problems.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the year goal of counting to 100.  Our math centers had a fall and turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about Veteran’s Day and completed Veteran’s Day activities, including a Veteran's Day flip book and even wrote a letter to a veteran.  It was a very special Veteran’s Day for us.

Seeds to Pumpkins!

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letter combinations of ai and ay.  We pretend we cannot hear well and say “Aye.”  We learned when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking, says its name and the second one is quite.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, a, j, ai, and ay.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book From Seed to Pumpkin.  We did many activities that centered on the story. 
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the sight words can and is.  We are going to keep our word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  
Math: We talked about more and fewer and shorter and taller.  We used our IPADS and the Seesaw app to take a picture of play-doh demonstrating the concepts of shorter and longer.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the year goal of counting to 100.  Our math centers had a fall and Halloween theme. 
Art:  We made a pumpkin project labeling the vine, stem, seed, pulp, brains, skin, and ribs.
