Snowy Day!

Focus on Curriculum

January 30, 2015

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combinations of ue and oi.  For oi we say, “Ship ahoy”.  We also learned that oy makes the same sound as oi. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, oi, and oi.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book The Snowy Day and did many activities including a Snowy Day packet.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the am word family this week.  First we started with the word am and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word am to make new words.  For example, for the am word family we formed the words (pam, ham, ram etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words get, help and now and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.

Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We also continued our subtraction unit. Our center activities have a winter theme.  Next week we will be working with a combination of addition and subtraction
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.
Social Studies: This week in our Weekly Reader we read about the “Frozen City” and the people who build ice castles and how the ice castles are built.

Building A Snowman!

Focus on Curriculum

January 23, 2015

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of qu and ou.  For qu we pretend that we are a duck saying quack, and for ou we pretend we poked our finger with a sewing needle and we say ou, ou, ouch.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, and ou.
Reading:  This week we read the book Winter Wonderland and Snow.  We compared the two books Winter Wonderland, a non-fiction story, and Snow a fiction story.
Word Family’s:  This week we started our word families.  We worked on the an word family.  First we started with the word an and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word at to make new words.  For example, for the at word family we formed the words (can, pan, ran, man, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words here, out and our and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We continued our subtraction unit. Our center activities have a winter theme.  We even did a subtraction lesson where we put a certain amount of goldfish in front of us and ate a certain amount (take away, minus, subtract).   “We ate our math homework.”  The children had so much fun with this activity.
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  We also did two writing activities the first one stating, “I like my warm hat!”  The second one stating, “ Here is the snowman!”
Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader that focused on animals and winter.  We talked about whether or not the animals liked the snow or not.

Art:  The children had an opportunity to build their own snowman.  The children cut out one snowball for every letter of their name and then one additional one for the snowman’s head.  On each snowball the children wrote one letter of their name and when the snowman was complete and you stood it up the snowman spells out the names of each child.  The children were able to add arms and a hat.  The projects will be on display on the walls by the kindergarten classrooms.

Winter!

Focus on Curriculum

January 16, 2015

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of ng and th.  For ng we pretend that we are strong.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, and ng.
Reading:  This week we read the book Love You Forever.   We also listened to an audio version of the book without pictures, and listened to the story read to us on the computer.  We took a big piece of construction paper and folded it in half.  On one side we drew a picture of what we saw when the audio version of the book was read to us and on the other half we drew a picture after we saw the pictures from the story.  We also read some winter stories such as Snowmen At Work, Snowmen All Year and The Mitten!
Word Family’s:  This week we started our word families.  We worked on the at word family.  First we started with our sight word at and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word at to make new words.  For example, for the at word family we formed the words (cat, bat, hat, mat, rat, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words he, she, and be and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We started our subtraction unit. Our center activities have a winter theme.
Writing:  We wrote the sentence: He is a strong man!  The children noticed that three of the words are our popcorn words and the other two words the children were able to read using their decoding skills.  After they wrote their sentence, they had a chance to color the strong man on the page.  Using the word strong was a good review of the ng jolly phonics lessons from this week.
Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader that focused on Martin L. King Jr. and his fight that all people would live in peace.  We did a writing activity that focused on Martin L. King Jr.

Art:  We completed a mitten project, which is hanging on the bulletin board outside our classroom.
