Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of er and ar. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, ue, oi, er and ar.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book Penguins a National Geographic Kids book.  We talked about things we thought we knew about penguins and confirmed them as we read the book.  We completed penguin activities in class.  We also added a Groundhog poem to our poetry binder.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ap word family this week.  First we started with the letter combination ap and then we add different letters to the beginning of ap to make new words.  For example, for the ap word family we formed the words (cap, map, tap etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words good, look, and jump and put our words in our popcorn word bags.  We are going to keep our popcorn word bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens and working with shapes.  This week we worked on 2-D and 3-D shapes.
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.  We also wrote about are Star Student of the week.
Social Studies: We learned about Groundhog's Day and completed a Groundhog Day project!  We also learned about animals and their shadows!
Art:  In class we made a penguin that will be on display in our classroom.
