Welcome Spring!

Focus on Curriculum

March 13, 2015

Jolly Phonics:  We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read Everything Spring.  We talked about spring weather coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.  We predicted as a class whether the month of March would have more days with weather like a lion or a lamb.  We had a class discussion discussing spring weather and completed some writing activities that revolved around our Everything Spring book.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the it word family this week.  First we start with the word ending it and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending it to make new words.  For example, for the it word family we formed the words (hit, bit, knit, kit etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words went, soon, and come and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We continued working on decomposing numbers 11-19.  We also took a one minute fluency test for addition and subtraction facts.
Writing:  We wrote about the Star Student of the Week.  We also wrote in our writing journals.  In our writing journals we added the 5 Stars to Writing.  A capital letter to start a sentence, proper punctuation, space between our words, neatness, and does our writing make sense?

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which focused on animals, reptiles, birds, and fish that are hatched from eggs.

Art:  The students really enjoyed making their Lion and Lamb project to celebrate spring coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.
