Happy Veterans Day!

Focus on Curriculum

November 14, 2014

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters oa and ie (vowel combination) together.  For oa we say “oh” and ie we pretend we are saluting saying, “aye aye captain”.   We learned when two vowels go walking the first vowel does the talking; saying its name, and the second vowel is quite.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, and ie.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book From Seed to Pumpkin.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We complete a sequence activity.  We also completed our very own Veteran’s Day book in honor of the men and women who serve our country and have served our country.  We added the poem November to our poetry binders.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words but and to and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Handwriting: We worked in our handwriting books focusing on the letter F, both upper and lowercase letters.
Math: We started talking about numbers to 20.  We practiced counting, reading and writing numbers 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the trimester goal of counting to 50.  Our math centers had a fall and Turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about Veteran’s Day and completed Veteran’s Day activities.  Our weekly reader focused on Pilgrims, their ship the Mayflower and Thanksgiving.
Art:  We made an American Flag that is on display outside our classroom in honor of Veteran’s Day and a turkey project that will be on display in our classroom until Thanksgiving break!
