Halloween Fun!

Focus on Curriculum

October 24, 2014

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters l and f.  For the letter l we pretend we are licking a lollipop.  To make the sound of the letter f we pretend that we are squeezing the air out of an inflatable fish. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, p, n, c, k, I, e, h, r, m, d, g, o, u, l, and f.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read Pumpkin Pumpkin.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We learned the definitions of enormous, observe, scoop and patient.  We learned about the sequence of a pumpkin all the way from the seed to picking and carving a pumpkin.  We even did a project to show that process.  We also read Disney Scary Stories. We read our very own small book Backyard Camping and I am Helping. We also added the poems Jack-O-Lantern to our poetry binders.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words me and am and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  We completed make a match activities focusing on the word am and me.
Handwriting: We worked in our handwriting books focusing on the letter D both upper and lowercase letters.
Math: We talked about reading, writing, and counting the numbers up to 10.  We also focused at looking for patterns.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of trimester goal of counting to 50.  Our math centers had a Halloween theme.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on SPIDERS!!!!!!!
Art:  We made a candy corn project with the sentence “ I like my candy”, and we also made a Ghost out of construction paper and cotton balls.  Both projects are hanging in our room and will go home after Halloween.
