My Friends!

Focus on Curriculum

September 12, 2014

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters i and p.  We pretend we are Inky the Mouse and are itching our whiskers and saying the sound of short i.  To make the sound of the letter p we pretend we are puffing out birthday candles. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, and p.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.   Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read My Friends.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We talked about things we have learned from our families and friends.  We learned the definitions of creature, imitate, companion, and explore.  We also read Chester The Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully and Pete The Cat And His Four Pete The Groovy Buttons.
Poetry:  We started our poetry binder.  We read and highlighted poems that focused on our popcorn words I and A.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words I and it and glued it in our popcorn word ring.  Our indexes will be going home in a few weeks once the children learn a few more of our sight words to put in our popcorn rings.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  We worked on sight word make a match activities.
Writing:  We started writing in our new writing journals.  We glued in our journals the sentence “ I like to play _____ with my friends. We had to write what we like to play using our kindergarten spelling to complete the sentence and then had to create an illustration to go with our sentence.
Math: We started our new math series.  We are concentrating on counting numbers zero to five.  We worked on counting 4 and 5 in different arrangements and reading and writing the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on Making New Friends.
