Enjoy The Memorial Day Weekend!

Focus on Curriculum                      May 23, 2014

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we started working with the short u word families um and ut.
Reading:  This week we read Building Beavers.  We learned many interesting facts about beavers and how they build their homes. We read Revenge Of The DinoTrux and many other fun books.  We also added a few new poems to our poetry binders, which will be coming home in a couple of weeks.
Writing:  With our ABC countdown upon us, we wrote letters to our friends in our class.  We learned that a letter starts with Dear and ends with Your Friend.  We also learned the proper punctuation when writing a letter.  We continued writing in our new writing journals. In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words black, orange, white, and brown and glued them in our spirals. We now have ninety six words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the, you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four, nine, said, this, that, new, soon, went, come, do, all, there, who, what, where, they, say, play, away, eat, please, want, with, came, ate, make, ride, was, are, saw, well, pretty, funny, under, find, blue, yellow, red, pink, black, orange, white, brown . Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We continued working on a combination of addition problems and subtraction problems at the same time.  We completed party on addition and muddy subtraction.  We played Dino Makes Ten and Spring Math Making Ten.  Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.  Please continue to practice addition facts that add up to ten along with subtracting numbers up to ten.
Social Studies:  Our weekly reader was all about fish. We learned that fish live in the water, have fins, have a backbone and have gills. We talked about Memorial Day and did a coloring page.  Thank you to all the men and women that serve our country.
Art:  In class we made a giraffe project with a poem on the back.  We are getting very excited about our upcoming zoo trip.
