Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Focus on Curriculum

March 14, 2014

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we worked on the short i word families.  We worked on the ip and ing word families.  We start with one of the word family endings: ip or ing, and then we add different letters to the beginning of the endings to make new words.  For example, for the ip word family we formed the words (rip, tip, drip, etc.)  We even talked about the ig family.
Reading:  This week we read A Day With A Doctor and A Day With A Mail Carrier!  We learned about what a doctor and mail carrier does for a living.  We learned the new vocabulary words prevent, healthy, load and important.  We also read the Dr. Seuss book A Wocket In My Pocket and created our very own Dr. Seuss character.
Writing:  We wrote about Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss.  In our writing we were able to use many of our new popcorn words suck as look, and, out, here, and come.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words soon, went, and come and glued them in our spirals. We now have sixty one words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four, nine, said, this, that, new, soon, went, come. Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.

Math:  We continued working on subtraction, subtracting from numbers up to ten and continued to practice addition facts that add up to ten.  Please practice reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.  Please continue to practice addition facts that add up to ten along with subtracting numbers up to ten.  We also had our second minute timed test on addition facts up to five by adding one to each number.

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which was about St. Patrick’s Day!

Art:  The students really enjoyed making their own leprechaun to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!  They will be in your child’s backpack today!
