More Winter Fun!

Focus on Curriculum

January 20, 2014

Jolly Phonics: This week the class learned the letter combination of ng and th.  For ng we pretend that we are strong.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, and ng.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.

Reading:  This week we read the book All You Need For a Snowman that tells a story of all the components needed for children to make a snowman.  We also read Cookie’s Week, in which a cat named Cookie, found himself in all kinds of trouble each day of the week.

Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words he, she, and be and glued them in our spirals. We now have thirty seven words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, and be. Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.

Math: We continued counting to 100 and counting by tens to 100. We focused on shapes that included, circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons.
Writing:  We wrote the sentence: He is a strong man!  The children noticed that three of the words are our popcorn words and the other two words the children were able to read using their decoding skills.  After they wrote their sentence, they had a chance to color the strong man on the page.  Using the word strong was a good review of the ng jolly phonics lessons from this week.
Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader that focused on Martin L. King Jr. and his fight that all people would live in peace.  We read a book and did a writing activity that focused on Martin L. King Jr.

Art: We made penguins that are on display on the bulletin board outside our classroom.
