Focus on Curriculum
December 14, 2018
Jolly Phonics: This week I introduced
the letter combinations oa and ie. Next week I will introduce the letter
combinations ee and or. Now we know the sounds of the
letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai,
oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, and x. We like to sing songs and do actions for
each sound to help us remember them.
Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound
packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the
alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can
practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that
letter.
Reading: We read the book Arthur’s
Perfect Christmas. We learned the
meanings of the definitions of family tree, related, and cousin. We also read Corduroy’s Christmas
Surprise, A Christmas Wish for Corduroy, Toy Story Christmas Toys, and Mooseltoe. We added the poem Little Ole
Elf to our poetry binders.
Next week will be Gingerbread Week. We
will read many books about our new friend the Gingerbread Man who mysteriously
ran away and is hiding somewhere in our school. (Sh! Please don’t tell the
kids!) J We
will read the books The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Pirates, The
Gingerbread Cowboy, The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Girl, and The
Gingerbread Man is Loose in the School, The Gingerbread Man is Loose at
Christmas Time, and The Gingerbread Man is Loose on the Fire Truck to
try and find clues of where our new friend went. The Gingerbread Man will leave us clues to where
he might be. We will make Gingerbread
friends in hopes that he returns. Along
with reading those books and gingerbread activities we will complete many other
fun holiday activities. We will also read
stories about the Gingerbread Man’s friends, Pete the Cat, Olive The Other
Reindeer, and Clifford’s Christmas.
The students will create their own Rudolph bag and put Reindeer food
inside to prepare for the upcoming holidays.
Sight Words: This
week we learned the sight words jump and up and next week we will learn the words, on,
help, and yes. We are going to keep our word rings in the
front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at
home.
Math: We continued working on addition and the concept of a part,
plus-a-part, equals a whole. We
continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.
We did holiday math activities all week. Our center activities have a
holiday theme.
Art: Our projects
included a Grinch, Gingerbread Man, a gift for you the parents, which will be
coming home early this upcoming week, and made reindeer food.
We hope our Gingerbread man will return for our Holiday
Party.
I want to wish
everyone a very safe and happy holiday season and best wishes for the New Year!
