Spring Is Here!
Focus on Curriculum
March 20, 2015
Jolly Phonics: We have completed
all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter
combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b,
j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y,
and z. We like to sing songs and do actions for
each sound to help us remember them.
Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound
packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the
alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice
with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading: This week our
readings focused on St. Patrick’s Day. We
read The Luckiest Leprechaun and Jaime O’Rourke and the Big Potato. We also read our very own small book Counting Shamrocks.
Word Family’s: We
worked on the in word family this week.
First we start with the word ending in and then we add different
letters to the beginning of the word ending in to make new words. For example, for the in word family we formed the words (win, pin, chin, bin etc.)
Popcorn Words:
This week we cut out the popcorn words do, all, and there and glued our words in our popcorn
word ring. We are going to keep our
popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice
our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words
with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens. We started our measurement unit. We focused on the key terms longer, shorter,
same, capacity, weight, and length. We took another one
minute fluency test for addition facts.
Writing:
We
wrote about the Star Student of the Week.
We also wrote in our writing journals.
In our writing journals we continue using our 5 Stars to Writing. The students wrote “I went” and then
completed the sentence. After their
writing was complete they illustrated a picture to go with their writing and
shared their work with their classmates.
We wrote the sentence I was very lucky_______ and the students finished
the sentence with their own thoughts to tie in with St. Patrick’s Day. We also played a consonant vowel consonant
game where the students had to search the room for pots of gold that had a
picture on them. The students then had
an answer sheet where they had to write the correct word in the corresponding
spot. Lastly, the students then read
back the correct responses to the class.
For example (I like my hat.)
Social Studies: We read our
Weekly Reader, which was about the wind and what the wind does!
Art: The students
really enjoyed making their very own Leprechaun that included what they would
buy if they found a pot of gold. All of
the St. Patrick’s Day projects turned out great. Parents you should be very proud of your
children.
