Happy Mother's Day!

Focus on Curriculum               May 10, 2019 

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we started a review on all of the word families we learned this year.
Reading:  This week we read Elmer and Elephants by National Geographic for Kids.  We labeled the parts of an elephant.  We also learned the new vocabulary terms: migration, herd, drought, instinct, and herbivore.
Writing: We wrote about Elmer the elephant.    We focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense. 
 Sight Words: This week we learned the sight words funny, yellow, and please.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We were working on representing numbers using tens and ones.

Art:  We completed a baseball craft after seeing Cougars players at our school today, along with two Mother’s Day projects.

Sharks and Fish!

Word Family’s: This week we worked on our short u family ug.  We thought of words as a class that end in ug. The students came up with (bug, dug, jug etc.)
Reading:  This week we read Rainbow Fish and Sharks by National Geographic for Kids.  In Rainbow Fish we talked about how important sharing and giving are and how they are more rewarding than receiving.  
Writing: We continued to write daily.  We focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  .
 Popcorn Words: This week we learned the sight words soon, new, now and well. We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We continued working on number bonds.  Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through 20. 
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on Rainbow Fish!

Art:  We completed a Rainbow Fish project.

Reading:  This week we read Chicks N’ Salsa to continue our animal unit.  We worked on a class research project focusing on animals, in particular, farm animals this week. 
Writing:  We continue writing daily.  We focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing we have a check list to double check our writing. 
Popcorn Words: This week we learned the sight words not, said, want and brown. Please practice the sight words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We continued working on number bonds both addition and subtraction.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on the planet Earth with this past Monday being Earth Day!.
Art:  We made a Chicks and Salsa Project!

Reading:  This week in celebration of Earth Day we read Miss Fox’s Class Goes Green and read How to Help the Earth by the Lorax.
Writing:  We wrote about how we can help the Earth and go green ourselves.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing. 
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words who, what, where and white. We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We worked on grouping tens and ones and then adding them together to find out how many in all. We also continued working with number bonds
Art:  We made an Earth Day project using coffee filters and markers

Writing:  We wrote about the story Hey Little Ant.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing. 
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words ran, must, went and black and put them in our popcorn word bags. We keep our popcorn word bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We are working on area, graphing, and number bonds.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on all the different fruits and vegetables we grow and eat.

Writing:  We continued writing in our writing journals.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  We wrote about what we did over spring break, and we wrote about what we like to do in the spring weather.
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words came, red, three and too. We are going to keep our popcorn bags in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We continued working with number bonds and working with area.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on butterflies.

Reading:  This week we read The Giving Tree, Little Quack, You’re My Little Bunny, and Hey Duck!
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ob word family this week.  First we start with the word ending ob and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ob to make new words.  For example, for the ob word family we formed the words (cob, Bob, job etc.)
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words this, that, and there.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked on the concepts of weight (lighter/heavier) and the concept of capacity.
Writing:  We wrote in our writing journals.  We also wrote about the stories we read in class this week!

Spring Ahead!

Reading:  This week we read Everything Spring and In Like a Lion Out Like a Lamb.  We talked about spring weather coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.  We predicted as a class whether the month of March would have more days with weather like a lion or a lamb.  We had a class discussion about spring weather.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ot word family this week.  First we start with the word ending ot and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ot to make new words.  For example, for the ot word family we formed the words (hot, cot, knot etc.)
Sight Words:  This week we learned the sight words are, but, and away and put our words in our popcorn word bags.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked with addition and subtraction including number bonds.  We also worked with measurement and data (length, height, weight).
Writing:  We continue focusing on what our writing needs to include.  A capital letter to start a sentence, proper punctuation, space between our words, neatness, and does our writing make sense?

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which focused on spring weather.


Art:  The students really enjoyed making their Lion and Lamb project to celebrate spring coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb.

Reading:  This week we celebrated Dr. Seuss all week long since his birthday is  March 2nd.  We read many of his classics along with a few new books.  We read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Oh the Thinks You Can Think!, The Cat In The Hat, The Cat In The Hat Comes Back!, Wacky Wednesday, Horton Hears A Who!, Fox in Socks, and Green Eggs and Ham.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the ip word family this week.  First we start with the word ending ip and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ip to make new words.  For example, for the ip word family we formed the words (lip, drip, rip, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the words two, blue, and find.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We worked on addition and did Dr. Seuss math this week!
Writing:  We wrote about the Dr. Seuss book Wacky Wednesday and illustrated wacky pictures that we shared with our classmates.  We also wrote about Green Eggs and Ham and Fox In Socks!

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader, which was about Dr. Seuss.



We had a lot of fun celebrating Dr. Seuss!

Word Family’s:  We worked on the ig word family this week.  First we started with the word ending ig and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending ig to make new words.  For example, for the ig word family we formed the words (big, pig, twig etc.)
Popcorn Words:  This week we learned the words they, with, and here.  We are going to keep our sight word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens.  We continued working on addition using a number line.
Writing:  We continue to write daily.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas. The students then had a chance to share their work with their classmates.
Social Studies: Our Weekly Reader focused on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln since this past Monday was President’s Day!
Art:  In class we made a Teddy Bear project that tied into our story for the week,  Bear’s Loose Tooth!


Next week is Dr. Seuss week in kindergarten.  Please be sure to check our Dr. Seuss schedule each day to find out about the fun activity planned for each day!

Jolly Phonics:  This week the class learned the letter combination of er and ar. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, ue, oi, er and ar.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read the book If I Were President. We also read Lincoln and Grace; a story based on true events of an eleven-year-old girl and her letter to President Abraham Lincoln right before he was elected President.  We talked about how women could not vote for the President and what it would be like to live in the 1860’s.
Word Family’s:  We worked on the in word family this week.  First we started with the word ending in and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending in to make new words.  For example, for the in word family we formed the words (bin,tin, win, etc.)
Popcorn Words:  We learned the sight words come, one and eat.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by one’s, five’s and ten’s.  In math we continued focusing on addition. We even completed a Valentine’s Day tens and one activity.    
Writing:  We wrote in our journals.  Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.  We also wrote what we would do if we were the President of the United States and made it into a class book that the students can read while at school.  The students then had a chance to share their work with their classmates.
Social Studies: We focused on President’s Day.  We completed an interactive Weekly Reader about Abraham Lincoln on our class whiteboard.  We also did a George Washington color by number, a Presidential hidden picture, and wrote about if we were President of the United States.
Art:  In class we made a President’s Day project.

Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, oi, and oi.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.

Word Family’s:  We worked on the it word family this week.  First we started with the word ending it and then we add different letters to the beginning of the word ending it to make new words.  For example, for the it word family we formed the words (hit, sit, pit, knit etc.)
Sight Words:  This week we learned the words have, our, out, saw, all, do.  We are going to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continue working on addition.  We did 100th Day math, all in celebration of the 100th day of school.
Writing: Each day we write the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas. 
Art:  In class we completed a craft that focused on the book The Day it Rained Hearts.

We had so much fun celebrating the 100th day of school this past Thursday!
