Happy Valentine's Day!
Focus on Curriculum
February 14, 2019
Jolly Phonics: This week the class
learned the letter combination of er and ar. Now we know the sounds of the
letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai,
oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, ue, oi, er and
ar. We like to sing songs and do actions for
each sound to help us remember them.
Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound
packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the
alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can
practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that
letter.
Reading: This week we read the book If I Were
President. We also read Lincoln and
Grace; a story based on true events of an eleven-year-old girl and her
letter to President Abraham Lincoln right before he was elected President. We talked about how women could not vote for
the President and what it would be like to live in the 1860’s.
Word Family’s: We
worked on the in word family this week.
First we started with the word ending in and then we add
different letters to the beginning of the word ending in to make new
words. For example, for the in word
family we formed the words (bin, tin, win, etc.)
Popcorn Words: We
learned the sight words come, one and eat. We are going
to keep our sight words in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can
practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the sight words with your child at
home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by one’s, five’s and
ten’s. In math we continued focusing on
addition. We even completed a Valentine’s Day tens and one activity.
Writing:
We wrote
in our journals. Each day we write the
students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more eager
to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas.
We also wrote what we would do if we were the President of the United
States and made it into a class book that the students can read while at school. The students then had a chance to share their
work with their classmates.
Social Studies: We focused on
President’s Day. We completed an
interactive Weekly Reader about Abraham Lincoln on our class whiteboard. We also did a George Washington color by
number, a Presidential hidden picture, and wrote about if we were President of
the United States.
Art: In class we made a President’s Day project.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all!
