Happy President’s Day!
Focus on Curriculum
February 19, 2016
Jolly Phonics: We have completed
all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter
combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b,
j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y,
and z. We like to sing songs and do actions for each
sound to help us remember them. Remember
to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which
shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that
we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with
your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading: This week we read the book If I Were
President. We also read Lincoln and
Grace; a story based on true events of an eleven year old girl and her
letter to President Abraham Lincoln right before he was elected President. We talked about how women could not vote for
the President and what it would be like to live in the 1860’s.
Word Family’s: We
worked on the et word family this week.
First we started with the word ending et and then we add
different letters to the beginning of the word ending et to make new
words. For example, for the et word
family we formed the words (jet, pet, vet etc.)
Popcorn Words:
This week we cut out the popcorn words one, two and three
and put our words in our popcorn word bags.
We are going to keep our popcorn word bags in the front sleeve of our
green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words
with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by one’s, five’s and
ten’s. In math we focused on positional
words.( in front of, behind, under, over, above, in between, next to,
etc.)
Writing:
We
wrote in our journals. Each day we write
the students are becoming more confident in their writing skills and are more
eager to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas. We also wrote what we would do if we were the
President of the United States and made it into a class book that the students
can read while at school. The students
then had a chance to share their work with their classmates.
Social Studies: We focused on
Presidents Day. We completed an
interactive Weekly Reader about George Washington on our class whiteboard. We also did a George Washington color by
number, a Presidential hidden picture, and wrote about if we were President of
the United States
Art: In class we made an Abraham Lincoln hat project and a
George Washington Project.
