Focus on Curriculum
February 21, 2014
Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics
sounds. Now
we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n,
c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or,oo, ch, sh, ng,
th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.
We
like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember
them. Remember to review the sounds we
have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and
sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year.
It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and
the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s:
This week we started our word families.
We worked on the ap and am word families. We begin first with the two word endings ap
and am, and then we add different letters to the beginning of the
endings to make new words. For example,
for the ap word family we formed the words (cap, map, trap, clap, nap,
etc.) We continuously review the word
families that we have already worked on. (at and an)
Reading: This week we read Lincoln and Grace; a
story based on true events of an eleven year old girl and her letter to
President Abraham Lincoln right before he was elected President. We talked about how women could not vote for
the President and what it would be like to live in the 1860’s.
Popcorn Words:
This week we cut out the popcorn words one, two, and three
and glued them in our spirals. We now have fifty two words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my,
like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into,
for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out,
get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, and three. Our spirals are going home
today. We are going to keep our spirals
in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school
and at home. Please remind your child
to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 and counting by tens to 100.
We continued our addition unit focusing on the meaning of addition, putting
together, and the sign for addition (+).
We also worked with counting on.
We have really started to focus on our math facts up to five.
Social Studies: We focused on Presidents Day. We completed an interactive Weekly Reader
about George Washington on our class whiteboard. We also did a George Washington color by number, a Presidential
hidden picture, and wrote about if we were President of the United States.
