Our First Week!

Focus on Curriculum

September 2, 2016

Jolly Phonics:  This week we learned the letters a and t.  We pretend ants are crawling up our arm for the letter a.  To make the sound of the letter t we pretend we are watching a tennis match. We know the sounds of the letters: s, a, and t. We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.
Reading:  We read The Kissing Hand.  We did many activities that centered on the story. We also read Chester The Brave and Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully!
Popcorn Words:  This week we worked with our first sight Word a. We also worked on  Chester The Brave activities that focused on the word a in which we had to color according to a color code.
Math: We started our first math unit.  We worked on counting 1, 2, 3, and 4 counting 1, 2,3 and 4 in different arrangements and reading and writing the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4.

A New School Year!

       August 26, 2016
The children learned so many new things during our first week.  Now we hang our backpacks on a hook in the hall with our number. We wear name tags so everyone in school will learn our names.  We discussed our “Good Manners” wall and how we are all respectful, responsible, and caring.
This week we practiced walking in a line quietly as we toured the school.  We can say, "Hands at our side, we walk with pride at Elizabeth Ide."  We visited the washrooms to check out the automatic flushing toilets and our very noisy hand dryers.  We found the office where we turn in our attendance report and other important papers.  We learned about playground rules and had recess outside.

This week I read The Night Before Kindergarten, Kindergarten Here I Come, Curious George’s First Day of School, How Do Dinosaurs Go To School?, and The Kissing Hand.  We also completed a Chester the Raccoon project.

We visited the library on Thursday and met Mrs. Hendron. Mrs. Hendron loves to read books to us and help us check out our books.  Please return the library book next Monday or Wednesday so your child will be able to check out another one. Library day is every Monday and Wednesday.

All students received a green folder. Please send it to school everyday in your child's backpack.

Each week I will send a newsletter on Friday via email.  If you do not have a computer at home to check your email, I will send you the newsletter by paper copy. Please write me a note to let me know. If you have questions or concerns at any time, please write a note and put it in the green folder or send me an email message.  Be sure to put your child's name in the subject line so I will recognize it as important mail.  We do not open mail that we do not recognize.
PAWS-itive Behavior
Everyday we say the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.
For PAWS-itive Behavior the students receive paws for being respectful, responsible, and safe. They are a nice little reward for going above and beyond.  The paws are then put into our class paw jar.  At the end of the week one winner is selected from each class.  That student receives a special certificate and prize.  That student also gets their picture taken with our principal Mr. Lazar and all of the other paw winners of the week.
Jolly Phonics:  We learned the sound of the letter s.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.

Remember:

We have snack everyday.  Please remember to send a healthy snack with your child each day, such as a fruit or vegetable.

It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we worked on our short u family un.  We thought of words, as a class, which ends in un. The students came up with (sun, bun, fun, etc.)

Reading:  This week we read Giraffe’s Can’t Dance.  We also learned the new vocabulary terms: prance, bold, splendid, sneered, and crept.
Writing: We wrote about Gerald the Giraffe.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing.
Popcorn Words: This week we cut out the popcorn words black, orange, white, and brown and glued them in our spirals. We now have ninety five words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the, you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four, nine, said, this, that, new, soon, went, come, do, all, there, who, what, where, they, say, play, away, eat, please, want, with, came, ate, make, ride, was, are, saw, well, pretty, funny, under, find, blue, yellow, red, pink, black, orange, white, brown . Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school every day.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We continued to practice addition facts that add up to ten, along with subtracting numbers up to ten. Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on what it would be like to live in the sea!
Art:  In class we made a giraffe project with a poem on the back.  We are getting very excited about our upcoming zoo trip.
