Focus on Curriculum
January 12, 2018
Jolly Phonics: This week the class
learned the letter combination of ng and th.
For ng we pretend that we are strong. Now
we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g,
o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, and
ng. We like to sing songs and do actions for
each sound to help us remember them.
Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound
packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the
alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can
practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that
letter.
Reading: This week we read the book Winter Wonderland
a National Geographic Kids book and
Snow. We also discussed the difference
between non-fiction and fiction books.
Popcorn Words: This
week we learned the sight words he, she, and be. We are going to keep our sight words in the
front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at
home. Please
practice the sight words with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens. We continued learning about addition and
subtraction with the focus on one more or one less, along with two parts being
put together to equal one whole.
Writing:
We
wrote the sentence: He is a strong man! The children noticed that the first three
words in the sentence are our sight words and the other two words left in the
sentence the students were able to read and write using their decoding
skills. After they wrote their sentence,
they had a chance to color the strong man on the page. Using the word strong was a good review of
the ng jolly phonics lessons from this week.
Social
Studies: We read
our Weekly Reader that focused on Martin L. King Jr. and his fight that all
people would live in peace.
Art: We completed a winter
project making a craft of kids catching snowflakes.
