Focus on Curriculum May 8, 2015
Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics
sounds. Now
we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n,
c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng,
th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.
We
like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember
them. Remember to review the sounds we
have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and
sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year.
It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and
the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we worked on our short o family og.
We thought of words as a class that ends in og. The students came up with (log,
dog, jog etc.)
Reading: This week we read Rainbow Fish and Sharks by National Geographic for Kids. In Rainbow
Fish we talked about how important sharing and giving are and how they are
more rewarding than receiving. We also
completed a Venn diagram comparing sharks and fish.
Writing: We wrote about our
Mom’s and made that into a special project for Mother’s Day. We continued our unit in writing where we
are focusing on writing our very own multiple page stories. In our journals we focus on using a capital
letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and
the neatness of our writing. We also
reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.
On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double
check our writing.
Popcorn Words: This week we cut
out the popcorn words pretty, funny, under and find and glued
them in our spirals. We now have eighty eight words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my,
like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into,
for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out,
get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four,
nine, said, this, that, new, soon, went, come, do, all, there, who, what,
where, they, say, play, away, eat, please, want, with, came, ate, make, ride,
was, are, saw, well, pretty, funny, under, find. Our spirals are going home
today. We are going to keep our spirals
in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school
and at home. Please remind your child to
bring their popcorn word spirals to school every day. Please practice the popcorn words with your child at
home. The words are getting difficult.
Math: We completed our shapes unit and started our unit on positions such as
above, under, over below, outside, inside etc.
Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through
20. Please continue to practice addition
facts that add up to ten, along with subtracting numbers up to ten. We took a mixed addition and subtraction one
minute timed test.
Social Studies: Our
Weekly Reader focused on coral reefs to go along with our study of fish this
week.
Art: We completed two Rainbow Fish projects that
are on display in our hallway. We made a few Mother’s Day projects that are
going home on Friday. Please keep an eye
out for a project that we made in class with your child’s handprints. The children were so excited to make each and
every mom a special Mother’s Day project.
Music: A Message from Miss. Wyse:
Hello Kindergarten Parents,
I am proud to announce that the
kindergarten musical this year will be Baby Beluga! Please join us in
the Lakeview gymnasium on Thursday, May 28th at 7 o'clock in the evening for a
fun night filled with entertainment!
This week all kindergarten
students listened to the music and are very excited to put on a show! Please
use the following link to practice your music from home over Spring Break and
up to our concert!
I would like to wish all the Mom's a Happy Mothers Day!

Friday May 15th
is a half-day. Dismissal is at 12
noon. If you are picking up your child
pick-up is at 12:15 P.M. after the buses leave.
If you have not already done so please sign
and return the permission slip for our new field trip to the Morton Arboretum
on Monday morning May 18th.
Read to your child every night!
Do not forget to place your Scholastic book orders.
Bring Library Books on Mondays and Thursdays
We have gym every day. Please remember your gym shoes.
Please check the green folder daily.
Turn in Box Tops to earn money for our school! - The class
with the most box tops wins a pizza party at the end of the year.
