Focus on Curriculum

Jolly Phonics: This week the class
learned the letter combination of qu and ou.
For qu we pretend that we are a duck saying quack, and for ou we pretend
we poked our finger with a sewing needle and we say ou, ou, ouch. Now we know the sounds of the
letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai,
oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, and ou. We like to sing songs and do actions for
each sound to help us remember them.
Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound
packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the
alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can
practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that
letter.
Reading: This week we read the book Winter Wonderland
and Snow. We compared the two
books Winter Wonderland, a non-fiction story, and Snow a fiction story.
Word Family’s:
This week we started our word families.
We worked on the an word family. First we started with the word an and then we add different
letters to the beginning of the word at to make new words. For example, for the at word family we formed
the words (can, pan, ran, man, etc.)
Popcorn Words:
This week we cut out the popcorn words here, out and our
and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.
We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our
green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home. Please practice the popcorn words
with your child at home.
Math: We continued counting to 100 by ones and tens. We continued our subtraction unit. Our
center activities have a winter theme.
We even did a subtraction lesson where we put a certain amount of goldfish
in front of us and ate a certain amount (take away, minus, subtract). “We ate
our math homework.” The children had so
much fun with this activity.
Writing:
We
wrote in our journals. We also did two writing
activities the first one stating, “I like my warm hat!” The second one stating, “ Here is the snowman!”
Social
Studies: We read
our Weekly Reader that focused on animals and winter. We talked about whether or not the animals liked the snow or not.
Art: The children had an
opportunity to build their own snowman.
The children cut out one snowball for every letter of their name and
then one additional one for the snowman’s head. On each snowball the children wrote one letter of their name and
when the snowman was complete and you stood it up the snowman spells out the
names of each child. The children were
able to add arms and a hat. The
projects will be on display on the walls by the kindergarten classrooms.
