May is Here!



 

Focus on Curriculum                 May 1, 2015    

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we worked on our short o family ob.  We thought of words as a class that ends in ob. The students came up with (knob, cob, job etc.)
Reading:  This week we read Chicks N’ Salsa to continue our animal unit.  We worked on a class research project on horses since we are focusing on animals, in particular, farm animals this week.  We read our very own small book On The Farm With My Friends! 
Writing:  We continued our unit in writing where we are focusing on writing our very own multiple page stories.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing. 
Popcorn Words: This week we cut out the popcorn words was, are, saw and well and glued them in our spirals. We now have eighty three words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, now, look, good, jump, will, have, must, one, two, three, four, nine, said, this, that, new, soon, went, come, do, all, there, who, what, where, they, say, play, away, eat, please, want, with, came, ate, make, ride, was, are, saw, well. Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school every day.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.  The words are getting difficult.
Math:  We started our unit on shapes.  Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.  Please continue to practice addition facts that add up to ten, along with subtracting numbers up to ten.  We took our very first mixed addition and subtraction one minute timed test.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on insects.
Art:  We completed a horse project that will be on display in our hallway.

Hello Kindergarten Parents,

I am proud to announce that the kindergarten musical this year will be Baby Beluga! Please join us in the Lakeview gymnasium on Thursday, May 28th at 7 o'clock in the evening for a fun night filled with entertainment!

This week all kindergarten students listened to the music and are very excited to put on a show! Please use the following link to practice your music from home over Spring Break and up to our concert!

Happy Earth Day!

We also completed Earth Day Math activities.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on butterflies.
Art:  We made an Earth Day project using markers and then spraying it with water.  They came out great!  Lastly, we completed a Hey Little Ant project.

Sprouting into Spring!

Jolly Phonics: We have completed all our jolly phonics sounds. Now we know the sounds of the letters and letter combinations: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, oa, oa, ie, ee, or, oo, ch, sh, ng, th, ou, qu, ue, oi, er, ar, z, w, v, y, and z.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we have learned this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children each letter and the sound of that letter.
Word Family’s: This week we worked on our short o family ot.  We thought of words as a class that end in ot. The students came up with (hot, not, cot, knot, etc.)
Reading:  This week we read Seed to Plant and Dandelions.  We also learned the new vocabulary terms: germination, pollination, seedling and soil.  We completed many activities that centered around seeds and plants.  We added the poem Sunflower Song to our poetry binders. We read our very own The Hearts book that focused on our new popcorn word with.
Writing:  We continued writing in our new writing journals.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing.

Math:  We continued talking about sorting, classifying, counting and categorizing data.  Please continue practicing reading and writing numbers 1 through 20.  Please continue to practice addition facts that add up to ten, along with subtracting numbers up to ten.  We took a subtraction quiz taking away one.  We made a flower project practicing counting by 10’s.  This project is on display outside our classroom.
Social Studies:  Our Weekly Reader focused on animals and how animals protect themselves from other animals.  We also did a plant project.  They will be on display on our class bulletin board.

April Showers!

Reading:  This week we read Miss Fox’s Class Goes Green, and 10 Things I Can Do To Help My World. We read our very own Seeds book that focused on our new popcorn word they. We also read our very own Protect the Earth small book.
Writing:  We continued writing in our new writing journals.  In our journals we focus on using a capital letter to start sentences, proper punctuation, spacing between our words, and the neatness of our writing.  We also reread our writing to make sure it makes sense.  On each page of our writing journals we have a check list to double check our writing.  We wrote about a chick and also wrote about what we did over spring break.
