Happy Thanksgiving!

Focus on Curriculum

November 21, 2014

Jolly Phonics:  This week I introduced the letters ee (vowel combination) and or together. We reviewed when two vowels go walking the first vowel does the talking; saying its name, and the second vowel is quite.  Next week we will learn the letter Z.  Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, and or.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year.  It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  We read the book A Turkey For Thanksgiving.  We did many activities that centered on the story.  We also read Turkey Trouble and our very own small book A Tale of a Turkey.  We completed a turkey sequence activity. We added the Thanksgiving poems to our poetry binders.
Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words ran and too and glued our words in our popcorn word ring.  Next week our words are into and for.  We are going to keep our popcorn word rings in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.
Handwriting: We worked in our handwriting books focusing on the letters G and J, both upper and lowercase letters.  We also wrote in our writing journals about what are some of our favorite activities to do.
Math: We continued numbers to 20.  We practiced counting, reading and writing numbers 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20.  We continue counting everyday in class focusing on our end of the trimester goal of counting to 50.  We also completed a Turkey Teens book.  Our math centers had a fall and Turkey theme.
Social Studies:  We talked about the Pilgrims and made a Pilgrim book.  We also read our Weekly Reader that focused on holiday lights and the different reasons people decorate with holiday lights and the different holiday celebrations at this time of year.
Art:  We cut out and colored a turkey project.
I wish everyone and their family and friends a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
