Snowy Days!

Focus on Curriculum

January 31, 2014

Jolly Phonics: This week the class learned the letter combination of ue and oi.  For oi we say, “Ship ahoy”.  We also learned that oy makes the same sound as oi. Now we know the sounds of the letters: s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, e, r, h, m, d, g, o, u, l, f, b, j, ai, oa, ie, ee, or, z, w, v, y, x, oo, ch, sh, th, ng, qu, ou, oi, and oi.  We like to sing songs and do actions for each sound to help us remember them.  Remember to review the sounds we have learned in the letter and sound packet, which shows all the motions and sounds used to make each letter of the alphabet that we will learn this year. It is for your reference so you can practice with your children as we learn each new letter and the sound of that letter.
Reading:  This week we read Brave Bear in which Bear overcomes his fear of heights and helps out his friend while finding courage himself.  We learned the meaning of the words, courageous, persistent, doubtful and confident.  We also read The Mitten by Jim Aylesworth.

Popcorn Words:  This week we cut out the popcorn words get, help, and now and glued them in our spirals. We now have forty three words and they are: I, a, it, in, see, big, my, like, up, run, on, at, we, me, am, did, not, is, can, but, to, too, ran, into, for, little, and, yes, go, no, so, the you, down, he, she, be, her, our, out, get, help, and now. Our spirals are going home today.  We are going to keep our spirals in the front sleeve of our green folder so we can practice our words at school and at home.  Please remind your child to bring their popcorn word spirals to school everyday.  Please practice the popcorn words with your child at home.

Math: We continued counting to 100 and counting by tens to 100. We focused on 3D shapes that included, sphere, cone, cube, and cylinder.  We made a 3D book and did many activities and played many games that included 3-D shapes
Writing:  We wrote three sentences this week, after each story I read in class.  Each time we wrote a sentence we made sure we started with a capital letter and ended with the proper punctuation.  Each sentence also included our new popcorn words of the week.
Social Studies: We continued learning about Penguins and how they move.  The students drew pictures of penguins diving, sliding, swimming and pooping out of the water.

Social Studies: We read our Weekly Reader that focused on Penguins.

Art: After reading All You Need For a Snowman the children had an opportunity to build their own snowman.  The children cut out one snowball for every letter of their name and then one additional one for the snowman’s head.  On each snowball the children wrote one letter of their name and when the snowman was complete and you stood it up the snowman spells out the names of each child.  The children were able to add arms and a hat.  The projects will be on display on the walls by the kindergarten classrooms.
